Context Aware Data Lineage Research with Perplexity

Understanding your data lineage and how data is used as it moves and transforms throughout your organization is a critical element to improving business outcomes through accurate and reliable data.

For larger and more complex organizations, many of their lineage maps now resemble a Jackson Pollock painting with lines everywhere! This prompted (no pun intended!) me to turn to Perplexity for help in researching the latest trends in Context Aware Data Lineage analysis, which starts to understand data lineage at a "row" level compared to traditional "column" based analysis.

Data Lineage Tools Research Data lineage tracing tools have evolved dramatically in 2025, with leading platforms like Collibra, Manta, and Microsoft Purview now offering automated lineage discovery across complex enterprise environments through advanced AI-powered parsing and graph-based visualization. While most modern tools excel at table-level and column-level tracking, the frontier challenge of content-based lineage routing—showing different data paths based on actual record content and data patterns—remains largely unresolved, with only emerging solutions like Cyberhaven's Large Lineage Model and specialized tools like dlt beginning to address true record-level and content-aware lineage tracking.
